Strengthening of family agriculture in the Western region is already a reality in several municipalities
With the support of institutions and private companies, the small business marketplace has been strengthening itself in the country. Family agriculture has joined the list of developments made in the Western region of Paraná with good initiatives, and an example of this is the formation of a cooperative in São Miguel do Iguaçu that’s betting on the incentive of the agribusiness in order to improve the lives of hundreds of farm producers. Itaipu Technological Park (PTI) and Itaipu Binacional are contributing to this process.
In 2002, the Association of Agriculture and Livestock Producers of São Miguel do Iguaçu was founded, the Aprosmi, with 18 associates at the time. The association began to grow and has established, through the years, partnerships with Itaipu and PTI in order to strengthen even more the chain of agribusiness in the Western region. As a result of these partnerships, the Cooperative of Family Agriculture, the Boreal, was officially born in 2016, along with associates from eight municipalities. They are: Ramilândia, Medianeira, Serranópolis do Iguaçu, Santa Terezinha de Itaipu, São Miguel do Iguaçu, Itaipulândia, Missal, and Foz do Iguaçu.
Over 250 families, plus 16 Indial and settled families, among small family agricultures, from all of these municipalities, will have a chance to show and sell their products in a distribution center that’s being build in São Miguel do Iguaçu.
The distribution center is being build in São Miguel do Iguaçu.
PTI has supported the technical project in its entirety in order to have the space being up to date with the legislation and able to hold both local and regional production. By the end of the year, estimated time of inauguration of the center, family agricultures will sell from crackers and compotes to bread, salami, cheese, honey, milk and derivative products, fruit and vegetables, crafts, all sectors of the Western production chain. The distribution center, trough the Boreal Cooperative, will be responsible by the transportation of the products straight from the properties, sanitary inspection, guarantee seal, and commercialization.
The center for distribution and commercialization of family agriculture can become one of biggest references in all of the Western region of Paraná. It will be composed of two trucks, four cold chambers, in a place of over 1.200 square meters, divided in spaces for receiving and processing of food, and another for reception and customer and tourist service, available all week.
The construction had an investment of over 3 million (50% from Itaipu and PTI and 50% from BNDES) in a land donated by the São Miguel City Hall, and should be inaugurated yet in 2018, after its finishing touches and furniture settlement.
According to producer and coordinator of the Boreal project, Adelar Soares de Oliveira, the partnership established with PTI has been fundamental for the cooperative’s success. “This is an important step towards the strengthening of family agriculture, the impulse for the agribusiness growth and the generation of jobs and wealth for settled families, Indians and those in need. We wouldn’t have a project if it weren’t for PTI”, he emphasized.
